There is a first class roadside crag for beginners at Ardheslaig (GR 784558) 4km NW of Shieldaig on the Applecross coast road. One of Scotland's most famous traditional climbs is the Cioch Nose (GR 797427) which is seen in profile on the drive up to the Bealach na Ba. This multi-pitch climb is Severe in standard and a prime target for experienced climbers. Further up the pass there are fine roadside climbs on Sword of Gideon buttress (GR 789413). Further north there are many crags in the Torridon and Gairloch areas within an hour’s drive of Lochcarron. These offer both “trad climbing” where all anchors are placed by the climber and “sport climbing” where bolt anchors are pre-placed. There are numerous mountain guides and climbing instructors based in the area who offer leading, coaching and instruction plus the provision of all technical equipment, so that visitors can sample this thrilling sport in safety.
